For Those with Audio Inclinations
In which I grapple with the embarrassment of self promotion...
Thank you to everyone who read, liked, and shared my last post on Star Wars Generations. It was a lot of fun to write and I’ve had some great conversations in response, even some based in strong disagreement with my premise. It was a reminder that Substack is nothing if not a thoughtful community.
I am committed to writing here more frequently (I still have a Dial of Destiny piece percolating!) but I wanted to be sure that anyone who has found me here knows about other ongoing projects to which I contribute. I am currently a part of three podcast projects where I get to blather on about my views on specific content. I have given the links below, but all should be available wherever you get your podcasts.
Weekly Ahsoka Reviews (and an Archive of Disney+ Show Content
For the eight episode run of Ahsoka, I am fortunate to have been asked to participate again with the “Breakfast Pack” shows on the Rebel Base Card feed. Greg McLaughlin is the creator of the show and while he is usually focused on trading card events, art, and history, he invites me on for Disney+ shows to review episodes and discuss key events. The format is fun, and unique: each week we write up questions we want answered about the episode, the show, and larger canon, and then we challenge each other to give our best answers. We’d love for you to listen to our Ahsoka coverage, but if you are endeavoring upon a rewatch, we have episodes for Bad Batch, Kenobi, Andor, Book of Boba Fett, and Mandalorian Season 3.
Film Coverage at the Long Take Review
I also have the great privilege of frequently appearing on the Long Take Review podcast created and hosted by Jen Sopchockchai Bankard. The show focuses on new film releases but always keeps an eye on the Oscars race and other major topics in film culture. We also bring our knowledge as scholars of rhetoric and composition to bear on the world of film. I had the pleasure of appearing a few times this summer, but I am most proud of our Across the Spider-verse episode and a completely indulgent and over the top celebration of all things Wes Anderson on the occasion of Asteroid City. The Long Take is also a favorite Substack of mine (all Jen’s writing), so subscribe to her feed if you aren’t already a follower.
Wheel of Time Read- (and Watch-) Along Podcast
Last but not least, I was asked in early 2022 to be co-host to my good friend Tylor Orme as we read through the Wheel of Time book series by Robert Jordan. The show, Through the Glass Columns, is based on Tylor being a limitless expert on the books (he’s on at least his fourth reread) and me being completely new to the series, as well as only a light reader of fantasy. It’s been fun to push myself into a new fan community. The episodes are evergreen, and each covers 2-3 chapters from the novels. The archive is fully available for those that would like to start at the beginning of book one (The Eye of the World) with us, and we should have the third book (The Dragon Reborn) completed at the end of 2023. If you are interested but not ready to commit at that level, we have a subset of four episodes from August 2023 that each covers two episodes of the Amazon television adaptation. These make a great sample if you want to check us out.
These are all projects that I love being a part of and that feature some of my best friends and smartest companions. I would be happy for you to give any or all a try, and promise that this will be the one and only shameless self promotion post on this feed.
Thanks!
